About

Hi, I’m Courtney, and welcome to my blog, Gringa in Mexico!

Ever since I was a little girl, I dreamed of living in Mexico and learning how to speak Spanish. As I got older, the dream stayed with me but remained elusive.

It wasn’t until a near-death experience helped me see that even though I was living a “good” life, being a “good” girl, doing the “right” things, I hadn’t really LIVED my life. In those dark moments, I saw clearly what really mattered to me, and I felt tremendous regret for not having followed the path that I had wished to follow for myself.

This experience caused me to take drastic action. Within six months and during COVID lockdown, I quit my job, sold my house, and got rid of the majority of my worldly possessions. My daughter and I moved to Mexico with our two dogs and what we could load onto and into my Ford Escape. This was my Great Escape.

Almost five years later, I straddle living in both the U.S. and Mexico. I’ve learned that having an international life and presence isn’t as complicated as it initially seems, and it something to be both embraced and celebrated.

I am a firm believer that when we face what scares us the most is when we truly begin to live, and my story is a testament to this fact.
